Do you become overwhelmed by the many different beliefs and opinions of others? What if the Holy Spirit taught you directly? Is that even possible?
Today I’d like to share with you some of my personal journey with the Holy Spirit and I hope that this may be of some benefit to you. However, as I share the mistakes I made, along with what helped me, please ensure that before implementing any ideas, you first and foremost pray to hear if this is right for you. The Holy Spirit works in different ways with different people, and you will have your own unique way that you relate to Him.
Super! Let’s begin . . .
When I was a child growing up, I had God-fearing parents and so Bible study was the norm in our home. As a teenager there would be verses that would really bother me and create unease in me.
For example, these words of our Lord Yeshua:
“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”
Matthew 7: 22,23 (NKJV)
And:
“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth,”
John 4: 23,24 (NKJV)
Obviously as a child they were explained to me by my parents and the faith I was in. Yet I remained troubled each time they came my way. When I left the church as a teenager and went my way, naturally those concerns went away.
BUT, when I retuned to the Lord in April of 2018, they resurfaced.
I was determined to discover for myself, through my own study, what these verses (and others) really meant. I wanted to examine all the teachings that I had been exposed to and see if they were accurate and true. My heart’s desire is to worship my Father in Spirit and Truth. I know it is yours too.
This is where I made some major mistakes.
Mistake #1 – Listening to a variety of online teachings
Goodness me – every single person I listened to had a different version to the previous one. Confusion mounted within me. I wondered how it was possible that so many men and women of God, could have such different viewpoints on a single topic.
It didn’t help that I kept remembering the Biblical warnings of being led astray by false prophets and teachers!
What to do?
I then stepped into my second mistake.

Mistake #2 – Leaning only on research
Having decided to close my ears to all the many conflicting voices and opinions – I embarked on the scholarly approach. Considering how much I love studying, it wasn’t a surprise that I would take this route.
The result was even greater confusion. The voices of the scholars of the Word were even more confusing. The only places where some light was shed, was during research of the original Hebrew and Greek words.
So, there I was, sitting with a mind and heart full of the teachings from childhood and a mass of new teachings. Thrown into the mix was numerous New Age philosophies that I had gathered whilst travelling through my wildness years away from my heavenly Father.
I was so frustrated!
Mistake #3 – Being ignorant of the One that is sent to teach us all Truth
Finally, I did what I should have done in the first place and called out to God.
You see several months prior I had re-dedicated myself to our Lord Yeshua. I still wasn’t in the habit of asking God to guide all my steps.
Anyway, back to the story . . .
By God’s infinite love and grace, He led me to this verse:
“I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.”
I John 3: 26,27
Wow! There was my answer so clearly stated. How could I have missed it? I remember starting to cry as gratitude filled my heart.
Many questions tumbled through my mind all at once.
I thought who was The Holy Spirit really? I was taught as a child that He was merely the force by which God did things. Was that true? Why did Lord Yeshua and the Apostle John refer to the Holy Spirit as a He? Would the Holy Spirit teach me directly? How would that happen?
And so, started my journey, (which at the date of this writing spans just over two years). A journey where I daily, knelt and prayerfully asked the Holy Spirit to teach me.
Soon a fire started to burn within. I wanted to know all about this wonderful teacher that would teach me everything, that would teach me the Truth. I wanted personal fellowship with the Holy Spirit as the Bible encourages us to do. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
No amount of time spent like this was ever enough!
What an amazing teacher the Holy Spirit is. His methods of teaching are so powerful, varied, and interesting.
I promise, if this is not yet a personal reality for you, it will happen for you. You will be undone, time and time again, by His love and willingness to fellowship with you. His keen desire to teach, guide, and lead you through life. And so much more!
Aren’t we so blessed that as Believers to have the opportunity to be taught by the Holy Spirit directly, personally? We need but ask and listen.
Let me share a few pointers that may help you on your journey to being personally taught by the Holy Spirit.
Tip #1: You must sincerely want to know the Truth

Nothing can replace sincerity of our desire to want to love God and serve Him in Spirit and Truth. We must come before Him with the right heart posture.
It’s also important that we realize our desire to know God and to know truth, is placed and fuelled inside us by the power of The Holy Spirit. It is not of our own doing. We have no desire within us to search for God. God calls us first and then the Holy Spirit births in us a desire to come to Him.
Beloved, if you have a desire to know God, who He really is, then that is GOD calling YOU! (John 6: 44)
The moment God calls us, the Holy Spirit goes to work to help us start our journey back to our Father. How marvellous!
Tip #2: For a while close off all the voices and opinions of others
I took several months and stopped reading books, listening to sermons, and simply took my Bible, prayed, and invited the Holy Spirit to teach me.
This helped me enormously to start hearing God’s voice. As I became still and tuned out all the many voices and opinions. Gradually I could start discerning what God’s voice sounds like, versus my own voice, or that of the enemy.
Does this sound like a radical step to take? Perhaps, but so many of us have too many voices and opinions flying around, and it prevents us from hearing Gods voice and discerning His truth.
Tip#3: Follow the example of Apostle Paul
Look at Paul’s own word:
“Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to understand that the gospel message I preach is not based on mere human reasoning. I received my message from no human source, and no one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ. You know what I was like when I followed the Jewish religion—how I violently persecuted God’s church. I did my best to destroy it. I was far ahead of my fellow Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors. But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvellous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being. Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascu. Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days.” Galatians 1: 11-18 (NLT)
Apostle Paul himself – withdrew. He did not consult humans. Instead he was taught personally by our Lord Yeshua. As you keep reading his letters you will learn that he was taught and guided by the Holy Spirit throughout his days.
The Apostle Paul needed time to lay down his deeply religious upbringing and personal beliefs. To be taught a new way, the truth. This takes time. He took three years before he was ready to step into his Kingdom Assignment.
When you step aside for a short while, keep in mind it’s not forever. It’s just to create space so you can hear Gods voice fully and develop a deeper personal relationship with the Holy Spirit.
It’s also a great idea to incorporate the Art of Withdrawing in your life. Closing all the voices and the noise. We have such an incredible model in our Lord Yeshua, who ensured He withdraw into stillness, and spent time with His Father.
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”
Luke 5: 16 (NIV)
To withdraw daily from all the noise is a wonderful practice, and will yield great benefits for your relationship with The Almighty.

In Summary:
Beloved, I pray that you will find the pointers above useful.
I trust that the mistakes I made will help you to not repeat the same in your journey with the Holy Spirit.
May the tips that have been shared here speed up your journey as you search for truth. We know and understand that our relationship with our Father is most important. Let’s never forget that He is looking for those who will worship Him in Spirit and Truth. (John 4: 23,24)
Call to Action:
Take time to understand who the Holy Spirit is. His likes and dislikes. Continue to build a wonderful deep relationship with Him and fellowship with Him daily.
The greatest outpouring of the Holy Spirit is upon us (Joel 2: 28,29). The Holy Spirit is roaming the earth seeking Believers that are yielded and want to participate with Him in this miraculous event.
Will you be the one, that raises your hand and says “I’m in, I’m all in!”
