“Who Comforts you?” is certainly an apt question to ask at present, not so?

The world is more topsy-turvy than we have ever seen. We’re seeing and experiencing things we never thought we’d see. What looked so solid and dependable such as one’s health, relationships, health-care systems, jobs, businesses, and income, etc.., have only proved to be as mere mist before the sun.

Many people have lost loved ones and have had their lives turned upside down in the wink-of-and eye. Others has lost their income. These experiences create stress, feelings of total overwhelm, and even fear.

The word on the street is: “Expect the unexpected.”

Notice the observations of wise King Solomon.

“I returned and saw under the sun that— The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.” 

Ecclesiastes 9 : 11 (NKJV)

Certainly, unforeseen circumstances befall us all. Because of this, there are many moments that we need to be comforted.

Who, or what do you turn to for comfort?

I know from personal experience how easy it is to turn to loved ones, or trusted friends, and even to throw yourself into longer hours at the office, (or exercise for that matter). Many people turn to substance abuse as a way of escaping stress and the stark reality of what is happening to and around them.

But did you know that we have another option? We have access to the most powerful being in all the universe. The very One who brought everything into existence just by a word from His mouth. The One who’s breath is so powerful that it gives life to every single person and every breathing organism in all the universe.

You and I have access to the most powerful comforter in all the universe.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”  2 Corinthians 1: 3,4 (NKJV)

How beautiful are these words? Not only are they a promise, but in His great love and mercy, our wonderful God not only comforts us, but gives us more than enough of His comfort, so that we have an abundance of comfort to give others. Isn’t that incredible!

I love that we are not just comforted in our moments of extreme pain, stress and overwhelm, BUT that we are given more than enough so we can comfort others. What a wonderful, caring, and abundant God we serve.

Let’s explore together a few verses that have something incredibly common between them, and that will help us grow in understanding of the great gift that we have been given. A gift, so wonderful that one of His names is Comforter!

John the Beloved identifies him straight away

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” 

John 14 :26 (NKJV)

Our Comforter is none other than The Holy Spirit.

Now let’s look at two more verses and then I’ll share with you what the link is between these three verses.

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:”

John 15 :26 (KJV)

And

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” 

John 16: 7 (KJV)

So, what’s the link between these three verses?

They use the exact same Greek word.  Παράκλητος Paraklētos – which has a variety of means such as: a) an advocate, intercessor, (b) a consoler, comforter, helper, (c) Paraclete.

Look at what Strong’s has to say further about this, and I quote:

3. in the widest sense, a helper, succourer, aider, assistant; so of the Holy Spirit destined to take the place of Christ with the apostles (after his ascension to the Father), to lead them to a deeper knowledge of gospel truth, and to give them the divine strength needed to enable them to undergo trials and persecutions on behalf of the divine kingdom.
(John 14:16, 26; John 15:26; John 16:7, cf. Matthew 10:19; Mark 13:11; Luke 12:11).

Isn’t this just incredible?

Are we even able to grasp the enormity of God’s love? The extreme care of our wonderful Lord Jesus? Specific arrangements have been made that you and I are not left to face life alone.

When you face enormous problems in your life, and you feel anxiety and darkness infold you, and the clouds are so dark that fear grips you. When you just cannot see your way out. Never forget this promise of our wonderful Lord Jesus.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.” 

John 14: 16 (NLT)

And

“No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.” 

John 14:18 (NLT)

Engrave these words in your heart, let the seeds of faith grow deeply in you as you mediate on these words. Let’s never let the evil one place an ounce of doubt inside us that God does not see, or hear us, or that He has left us.

Never forget that our Comforter, The Holy Spirit has been given to each of us who believes in Jesus as our Saviour. When we repent of our sins and choose to no longer follow our own ideas of how to live life, but His.

A understanding that really stirred my heart, was when I realized that Jesus (God Himself), came to earth at a very serious juncture in time – and now (God Himself) has come again to be with us, in the form of The Holy Spirit.

No mighty angel was sent to us. No God is here Himself. Let that thought sink deeply into your mind and heart. Take the time to sit silently and let that take root deeply within you. 

Ask the Holy Spirit what this means practically for you? Especially when you meet times of uncertainty, anguish, deep pain, and overwhelm.

The wonderful, all powerful Holy Spirit can create miracles in your life right now, if you will but recognize Him, turn to Him, and be taught and led by Him.

Now, before we wrap up today’s thoughts. Let’s for a moment speak a little more seriously.

Things are not right in the world, are they? 

Yet we are not left clueless to the major events that are about to happen on earth. We even know their sequence, and many of them are starting to happen right Infront of our eyes. These can be found in the book of Revelations. 

We are also clearly told that we as Disciples of Christ will sooner or later face persecution. That every single person on the planet will need to decide which side they are on. When we stand for our Lord Jesus, we will be persecuted. There isn’t a way out of it. 

Let’s be mature and face the truth in God’s Word. Let’s use the time wisely that God has given us, to strengthen our faith and prepare for what is to come.

Now is the time to develop your relationship with God, so that you can hear His voice clearly. Your very life depends on it, and so does the lives of your family.

Now is the time to develop an intimate walk with our Lord Jesus and with The Holy Spirit. Our Comforter. The very One sent to help us right now and especially in the tough days ahead.

Now is the time to be deep in the Word of God so our faith can grow. Let’s be praying for the Spirit of Discernment so we can see the truth and not be led astray.

Let’s determine to cast out fear. No matter what we may face now or in the future – lets learn to rely on God’s promises. Store them deep in your heart. Trust Him fully. Lean on Him, and not your own understanding and know that He will always be with you.  

“I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear?” 

Isaiah 51: 12 (NLT)

Remember this in the days to come:

“For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.”

2 Corinthians 1: 5 (NLT)

In Summary:

We serve such a good, good, and wonderful God. He sent the Comforter – The Holy Spirit – to be with each of us. He is here. He is waiting for you to recognize and embrace Him.

Embrace His presence and the friendship He is extending to you. He’s wonderful, kind, loving, wise, and you can share anything with Him. He will convict you, but never judge you. He will always comfort you, and lead you into the love of the Father, and into arms of Jesus.

He will never leave you!

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;”

John 14 :16 (KJV)

Forever means forever. Even after this life, He will still be with you.

Call to Action:

Beloved, embrace the Comforter, get to know Him. Let Him lead you through life. You need never be alone. Just invite Him in and He will be there.

He’s waiting to love you and teach you. Waiting to show you the way and comfort you. He’s there to give you strength when you have none of your own.

What a wonderful gift, please don’t reject Him. Love Him with all your heart. Take His hand and do life with Him. I promise you will never regret it. Instead you days will become filed with a delight you cannot even begin to imagine.

1.   Father, we thank you for your great love and mercy towards us. Father thank you so much for the gift of The Holy Spirit. We love you so much.

2.  Lord Yeshua we thank you for your great love and faithfulness. Thank you for the gift of Salvation and life itself.  Thank you for sending The Holy Spirit to help us.

3.  Holy Spirt, we want to know you, we welcome you and invite you into our hearts and into every facet of our lives. Show us how to have a relationship with you. Teach us how to be sensitive to your guidance. We appreciate you and are so thankful that you help, strengthen, and comfort us.  Thank you.
