The Importance of the Holy Spirit

Why is an accurate knowledge of the Holy Spirit so vital for all Believers?

Let’s spend a few minutes together and discuss this question.

There is much confusion about who the Holy Spirit really is. Whenever I ask this question, I receive such a variety of answers. Some say he is a creative force, others that he is God’s active power, and others say he is God himself.

But before we answer that question lets first address the question, “Why is accurate knowledge of the Holy Spirit so vital?   Afterall, if it’s not important, why bother to study it, or discuss this in great length, not so?

Let’s begin by considering the first reason.

First Reason:

Our Lord Yeshua said:

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”

Matthew 12: 31,32

Surely these two verses should be more than enough to make us stop and take serious note of the importance of the Holy Spirit. These are not men’s words, but the very words from our Lord Yeshua. He considered it most important to give us this warning. Should we not take heed?

I have found that many believers are most flippant when it comes to their study and understanding of the Holy Spirit. No wonder our lives are powerless, and do not reflect the power and authority in which we are commanded to walk in.

Let’s consider the deeper meanings of the Greek word used for blasphemy. What did our Lord Yeshua really mean when He said this word?

According to Strong’s these are the deeper and more comprehensive meanings of this word.

Βλασφημία – blasphēmía – literally, slow (sluggish) to call something good (that really is good) – and slow to identify what is truly bad (that really is evil). AND switches “right” for wrong (wrong for right), i.e. calls what God disapproves, “right” which “exchanges the truth of God for a lie”

I felt the fear of God as I read these verses.

If we hold an incorrect concept of who the Holy Spirit is, are we not in effect in great danger?

Let me give you an example from my own journey. Due to certain beliefs I held about the Holy Spirit, I always referred to the Holy Spirit as “it”. Yet our Lord Yeshua referred to the Holy Spirit as a “he”. Was I not guilty of blasphemy then?

There is a profound difference between an “it” and a “he”. Was I not exchanging the truth of God, as written in His Word for a lie? (Note the definitions as given above).

Beloved, we must be incredibly careful when we speak about the Holy Spirit. Let us search for the truth of who the Holy Spirit is and honour him accordingly.

Yet what is the truth?

Most Believers love to search Google for their answers. (Yes, I did that too in the beginning). Why? Because it’s easier to go there and find a quick answer that suits us. It’s difficult to sit with the Word of God, deep in prayer, and WAIT until we receive the instruction and revelation as promised.

“But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.”

I John 2: 27 (NLT)

When our instruction comes, and it differs to what we may have believed, I pray that we will always remain humble and quickly make the adjustments in our thinking and beliefs.

Second Reason

Imagine for a moment this scenario.

Imagine you are one of Yeshua’s disciples. It’s been another full day with Lord Yeshua. His beautiful voice constantly guiding and teaching you during the day. You’ve experienced and seen even greater miracles, signs, and wonders. He then looks at you tenderly and says these unexpected words:

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.”

John 14 :15

You’re shocked to your core. You think “Is my Lord going to leave??” Your worst fears come true as He starts to talk to you of Him leaving. (Read John 15).

He speaks however of leaving you with a Gift. A gift so special – The Holy Spirit. A gift that not everyone has the privilege to receive. A gift that will come from heaven to help you, comfort you, teach you, and so much more!

In silence you stand and listen to His words:

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

John 16: 5-7 (NLT)

Can you imagine your emotions, the thoughts scrambling in your head? What could be more beautiful than your Lord by your side?

What’s more your Lord is saying I’m sending you a gift, a gift far more precious than my continued presence here with you.

Lastly the Lord explains quite clearly what The Holy Spirit will do, his purpose, and importance,

“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.”

John 16: 12-15 (NLT)

Oh, the depth and the marvel of these words of our Lord Yeshua.

We’ll go deeply into these verses in another Blog … but let’s keep our focus!

We’ve been given a precious, precious gift from Heaven. Not just a gift that’s to be placed on the shelves of our lives, but a person (more about this later).

The Holy Spirit is the most powerful person (being) on this earth today!

Should we not be more diligent in coming to know Him? Should we not be on our knees in gratefulness for this precious gift from our Lord Yeshua. Our Lord who had to die a cruel death and leave, so that amongst other things, The Holy Spirit may come to us.

How dare we:

  •     Not pay attention to Him. (Psalms 51: 11)
  •     Not do diligent study of God’s Word and humbly ask Him to reveal himself to us.  (Acts 17: 11)
  •     Not get to know Him and have deep fellowship with Him. (2 Cor 13: 14)
  •     Make light of this gift from our Lord and King Yeshua. (John 14.15 & 16)
  •     Speak and believe inaccurately who the Holy Spirit is, His character, and ministry. (Matthew 12: 31,32)

In Summary:

Beloved, we have spoken today of only two reasons regarding the vital importance of an accurate understanding of who the Holy Spirit is.

  • Staying clear of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (the unforgiveable sin)
  • A gift from the Lord Yeshua himself – that we may reign victorious, right here, right now

Join us next week as we discuss – Who Is The Holy Spirit?

Call to Action:

I urge you to learn all you can from God’s Word about the Holy Spirit. Humble yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you. Have daily fellowship with the Holy Spirit and allow Him to teach and guide you into all truth. Then our worship will be acceptable in the sight of our Lord.

Prayer Points

1) Father, please forgive us if we in our ignorance, have spoken against your Word regarding the Holy Spirit, we pray for your mercy and forgiveness.

2) Lord Jesus, we are so grateful for the precious gift of The Holy Spirit that you have given us – we thank you for your great love.

3) Holy Spirt, we want to know you, we welcome you and invite you into our hearts and into every facet of our lives. Please come and teach us the truth – that our lives may bring Glory to God. Help us to be ready for the greatest outpouring of you the world has ever seen. Thank you.

All glory, praise, and honour to you Yahweh.
In your mighty name Yeshua we pray. Amen.
