The Impact of Trust

How lovely it is when you can trust someone.

Imagine for a moment that special someone. Someone you have total trust and confidence in. Someone you can fully depend on. You know they will come through for you when it’s needed. They will never let you down, hurt you, or abandon you. They are always there, rock solid.

They are there for you in the good and in the tough times. They love to see you win and can’t wait to celebrate your successes. Should there be a misunderstanding, they always give you the benefit of the doubt. They never slander, gossip or say malicious things about you. They forgive your mistakes quickly and easily and look to cover them with love.

When you are in a relationship of such trust, you rest deeply. You can let go. You can be fully you. You spend your days in ease, love and joy.

When this type of trust a unique closeness develops and this special relationship becomes a scared treasure in your life. It can’t be bought. Its value is unmeasurable. It’s sacred and holy ground.

These scared relationships of trust are so very important and valuable in our lives, aren’t they?

The Impact of Distrust

Have you ever been around someone who, just doesn’t believe in you? No matter what you try, or how many times you show you are dependable, or able they just don’t trust. It’s an awful feeling, isn’t it?

When there’s a lack of trust in a relationship, there is no closeness only distance. No one feels safe, and hearts full of love, close. Darkness enters and all beauty is lost. Truly sad and not one we want to be a part of.

There is such a deep connection between Trust and Intimacy. They go hand in hand. Sacred, holy ground indeed.

Trust and Intimacy with God

Recently I read a few scriptures that had a fresh impact on me, and they revealed to me how utterly vital the element of trust is, in order to have that wonderful, special, intimate relationship with God.

Let’s start with . . .

I just love this scripture . . . every single word has so much meaning and impact. The entire feel of this scripture is so wonderfully solid.

Let’s unpack just a few words to enjoy this impact together.

“Impossible” … the dictionary defines this word as “not able to be occur, exist, or be done. Out of the question. Unachievable.

Without faith, without trust “it IS impossible to please our Father.” There are no maybe’s, or ifs here. Simple truth stated plainly so there can be no misunderstanding. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him!”

It’s fascinating what follows this dramatic statement made in Hebrews.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

There are two things in this verse – that are an absolute must. Non-negotiable. We must believe that He is, and trust that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

There’s a fabulous sermon by Charles Spurgeon “How to Please God” and he first preached this on August 20th, 1885. Yes 135 years ago! It remains such a gem. He takes an entire 55min on just this one verse alone. Do set some time aside to listen to this. I know you’ll be taken to greater depths of understanding and revelation as I was.

To enjoy deep, warm, intimacy with our Father we must trust Him fully.

The Impact on God when we distrust him

This morning as I read the following verses, I was really affected by how we make The Almighty feel when we don’t trust him.

In the following verses David is speaking of the Israelites during their time in the wilderness. (Do take a moment and read the whole of Psalms 78 for full context).

“Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved. They even spoke against God himself, saying, “God can’t give us food in the wilderness. Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.” When the LORD heard them, he was furious. The fire of his wrath burned against Jacob. Yes, his anger rose against Israel, for they did not believe God or trust him to care for them.

Psalms 78:17-22 (NLT)

Notice how when they didn’t trust Him, He was furious! What was He furious about? That fact that they did not trust him to care for them.

God then goes on to feed the Israelites in the most miraculous way. The verses speak of how He commanded the skies to open, and He opened the doors of heaven. Just imagine that!

Manna (the food of angels) and meat rained down on them.

On a side note –  Exodus 38:26, Moses gives the exact number of people who left Egypt. The figure of 603,550 is given as the total of males of twenty years and older, that were registered for service. (Not including older men, women and children). That’s a substantial amount of people to feed 6 days a week for 40 years!

Every single person had more than enough. God gave them so much they couldn’t eat more. But then . . .

“But in spite of this, the people kept sinning. Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.”

Psalms 78:32 (NLT)

The ongoing verses speak about how they only paid God lip service, they lied to Him with their tongues, but their hearts were not loyal to Him.

“Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland.”

Psalms 78:40 (NLT)

It’s easy for us think of how ungrateful the Israelites where. Yet, do we not make God furious every time we become worried about our daily necessities? Let’s rather trust our Father and know that He will care for us.

These are challenging times, and it’s very easy to have concerns about our welfare, health and income. It’s easy to join the masses and become stressed about how we are going to provide for our families. Yet if we continue with this thinking we sin against our Father, and we hurt Him.

I hate the thought of hurting Him, don’t you?

Let us resolve today to pray for an increase of our faith and trust in The Almighty. Let’s decide to take Him on his Word.

In Summary:

Trust Creates: Rest, confidence, closeness and allows love to grow
Distrust Creates: Unrest, doubt, distance and love dies

We may only grow into a wonderful and intimate relationship with our Father if we trust Him. When we do, a deep rest (His Rest) comes upon us. We live our days in confidence and joy, for He is so good, faithful and true. He will never let us down. He has promised that He is with us. Always.

1) Father, we realize we hurt you and sin against you each time we let concerns overtake us – it shows we don’t trust You. Please forgive us Father.

3) Holy Spirit, please help us to grow in faith. Help us to trust you fully. Help us to enter God’s special rest, and to develop and treasure our personal relationship with The Almighty.
